An Overview of Spain’s Most Known Music and Dance Style Called Flamenco

Many people find music to be a great method to convey themselves, and is an art form as popular as painting and writing literature. Spain is a country rich with many types of music, as diverse as the different types of architecture, paintings, and sculptures that they have accumulated over the years. When one considers Spanish music, one cannot help but think about Flamenco because it is, surely, one of the most known dance forms that came from Spain. Contrary to popular belief, Flamenco is only popular to one of Spain’s regions; it came from Andalusia, an autonomous community in Spain and is considered the second largest in terms of land area in the country. However, a quick reseach on the beginnings of Flamenco will show you that this couldn’t be farther from the truth; Flamenco is actually only famous in one part of Spain which is the Andalusian area.

Flamenco is separated into three areas and is the combination of the guitar, the dance, and the song elements. The swift movements and transitions as well as the loud, fancy foot works defines the Flamenco apart as a dance style. The art form continued to flourish even though it was largely ignored by neighbouring regions.

Flamenco’s roots can be retraced back to Gypsies who have passed through or settled in the Andalusian regions during those times; this region was also populated by Jews, Moors, and other persecuted and discriminated groups. Other experts believed that Flamenco is a fusion of gypsy dance and the descendants of Moorish music during the 8^th century up until the 17^th century; still, a number of people considered that aside from Moorish and gypsy influence, the music of India, Egypt and the music of the Byzantine church played an vital role in shaping Flamenco. The inhabitants of Andalusia who were also supporters of the art form were largely illiterate and had no means of recording their own history; most were Jews, Moors and the likes who were, like Gypsies, perceived to be parts of the lower class of Spanish society. Another reason for the hindrances in learning the ancestry of Flamenco is that the lower class people have no education and cannot write and they just maintained the music through oral traditions; worst of all, the Jews, Muslims and Gitanos, which make up the lower class, were being killed throughout the period of Spanish Inquisition.

Regardless of the discrimination that Flamenco and its history went through, it still distinguished itself other cultures. However, even if its roots is uncertain, one fact remains; it has become one of the world’s greatest influences on dance culture.
